About our school

Scarborough Banner

Welcome to Scarborough Public School.  We look forward to a long and happy association with you and your child.

Scarborough Public School provides the educational focus for students from a cluster of Wollongong's northern communities. As a small school it caters for the needs of its local community but draws many students from other areas who seek out the special features of the school. These features include: strong links with the parents and community; leading edge literacy and numeracy programs; heightened educational opportunities in the arts; organisation which accommodates different learning rates and styles; outstanding opportunities for parental involvement and participation and; a strong commitment to Student Welfare. As a small school it succeeds in delivering a wide range of quality opportunities and programs by complementing the committed efforts of its small, experienced teaching staff through extensive use of community expertise. This expertise includes; administrative staff, specialist music, gymnastics, art, drama and technology expertise. Students' progress is reported through three-way conferences and extensive written reports. Students' self assessment and goal setting is also a feature of the learning program. The wide achievements of the school continue to indicate that it is achieving its mission of "Excellence, Opportunity and Responsibility".

With the Illawarra escarpment as a backdrop, Scarborough Public School sits perched on a headland overlooking the Tasman Sea. It is a small heritage listed school located in the northern suburbs of Wollongong, catering for approximately 75 students and its supportive local community.

The atmosphere of the school is warm and welcoming, a mood which is reinforced by the historical charm of the building and the attractive physical environment bordered by trees and gardens. As a small school, we are able to ensure that no student gets lost in the crowd. Every student is nurtured, challenged and motivated to achieve within a school environment that is supportive and focused on student wellbeing.

Our expectations for learning are high for every student and reflect the aims and goals of both our community and the students themselves.  We have a very strong core literacy and numeracy focus and believe in providing integrated and meaningful learning programs for our students across all key learning areas. We understand that each child is an individual with different learning needs and goals. We  provide differentiated learning programs, aligned to the curriculum to ensure all students are challenged, independent learners who are working towards clear learning goals.

We pride ourselves on being a school where creativity is nurtured and learners are encouraged and motivated to explore and make, whether it be through hands-on science programs in robotics, producing video news reports for our Journalism Team, making clay sculptures in our renowned art program or performing in our Orff Ensemble. We provide the tools, strategies and motivation for our learners to become true problem finders and solvers, key skills in this rapidly changing world. Our annual Art Show, held here every October is a highly respected and anticipated local event.

At Scarborough Public School we believe in taking down the walls between learners, whether it is through our use of composite classes, whole school programs or collaboration across our local Community of Schools and further afield. Our students are part of a global world and their learning should be collaborative and inter-connected to reflect this.

Curriculum implementation and collaborative learning is supported by ready access to the latest technology and resources. A large collection of modern notebook computers and  iPads are located in each room, providing immediate access for student research and learning.  Our technology is complemented by an outstanding library of quality fiction and  factual texts selected by our qualified teacher-librarian.

Students are encouraged to value individuality, creativity, respect, empathy, commitment and responsibility in an environment where learning is treasured. We support students to develop resilience and independence. Our classrooms are vibrant, creative and innovative, collaborative and inclusive, relevant and well-resourced.  Quality teaching and learning is achieved as a result of the commitment, dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm of the teachers who genuinely care for the students they teach.

We extend a warm invitation to you to become actively involved members of our school community by participating in any number of ways, some of which are listed below.
